Who is a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

At our Indiana practice, Mommy Makeover surgery is a comprehensive procedure that has made a positive impact on many women's lives, but it's not right for everyone. Good candidates should be committed to caring for themselves both before and after surgery by quitting smoking, taking adequate time off of work, and arranging for help around the house. Good candidates are also generally healthy and at or near an ideal weight. A Mommy Makeover is not a weight-loss procedure, and it is most successful for women who can commit to a healthy lifestyle that includes a good diet and exercise routine. This prevents future weight gain that could reverse the positive results of the procedure.

Some women are surprised to find that they can be good candidates for a Mommy Makeover even if they don't have children. The treatments that Dr. Galante frequently combines for this procedure treat concerns that are associated with pregnancy, but they can also help non-mothers who simply want to contour their breasts and bodies.

Is this type of combination surgery safe?

Yes. Mommy Makeovers usually include breast lift with or without breast augmentation, liposuction, and a tummy tuck at our Indiana practice. Combining these different procedures into a single surgery is not uncommon. When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon who has plenty of experience with body and breast contouring, such as Dr. Galante, Mommy Makeovers are quite safe. If you have concerns about anesthesia or other elements of the surgery, be sure to share them with Dr. Galante during your consultation. He takes the time to listen to you and reviews your medical history carefully to ensure that Mommy Makeover is the appropriate and safe option for you.

What are the advantages of combining procedures?

There are several advantages to combining several surgical procedures into a single surgery. One major advantage is price. Although the initial up-front cost of a Mommy Makeover is more than a single procedure, combining options means that some fees, such as operating room fees or anesthesia fees, need to be paid only once. If there are several surgical procedures you'd like to undergo, combining them is more affordable in the long run.

Patients who combine procedures also enjoy a reduced total recovery time. Instead of several 1- or 2-week recoveries spaced several months apart, Mommy Makeover patients generally only need a single 2-week recuperation period before they can return to work and other daily activities.

How much does a Mommy Makeover cost?

The cost of a Mommy Makeover is extremely dependent on the specifics of the procedure. The surgeries you choose, the techniques Dr. Galante uses, your anatomy, and other factors all have a hand in determining your final cost. Dr. Galante understands that cost is a major concern for many patients, and he strives to keep his fees competitive with other local plastic surgeons.

During your consultation, Dr. Galante provides you with a written quote that's been adjusted to reflect your specifications. He also offers some financing options to ensure your procedure fits into your budget.

Will I have significant scarring?

Today's surgical techniques have minimized the potential for scars, but it's important to remember that some scarring is still an inevitable part of any surgery. Prior to your Mommy Makeover, Dr. Galante explains where he will make his incisions and what type of scarring you may expect. Most incisions made during a typical Mommy Makeover develop into discreet scars that are well-hidden by clothing. With proper postoperative care and good sun protection habits, you can further minimize the appearance of scars.

What will my recovery be like?

Total recovery time varies from patient to patient and is largely dependent on the procedures that are performed. Most women are able to return to work after about 2 weeks, but you will likely require more time off if you work a physically demanding job.

Dr. Galante encourages light activity, such as walking, during the recuperation period. This can reduce the risk of blood clots. However, other activities that involve bending and lifting are not advisable. We typically remove drains and sutures in about a week. Dr. Galante provides you with a customized timeline that guides you through your own recuperation process.

How soon after having children can I have a Mommy Makeover?

This answer is different for each mother, and it mostly depends on whether your body is still changing as a result of your pregnancy. It's important that your weight is stable, that your breasts are no longer changing, and that you are done breastfeeding. Dr. Galante advises most patients to wait about 3 to 6 after having a child. You should also be able to commit to certain activity restrictions following surgery that some mothers of young children find difficult to stick to, such as not picking up a child for a few weeks.

On the other end of the spectrum are mothers whose children are grown. This surgery is appropriate for them, as well, rejuvenating the confidence of mothers of all ages.

Can I have a Mommy Makeover if I plan to have more children?

Although it would be perfectly safe to have more children after your surgery, pregnancy would likely reverse some of the positive cosmetic results. If you plan to have more children soon, Dr. Galante recommends waiting to have surgery. If you may not have children for several years, you may want to go ahead and have surgery so you can enjoy the aesthetic benefits now. Be sure to discuss this with Dr. Galante; he will help you form a surgical schedule that fits within your plans.

How can I maintain my results?

Your best results start with closely following Dr. Galante's instructions both before and after surgery. By caring for yourself during this important time, you do your part to ensure your surgery is safe and your recovery is smooth and uneventful. Once you begin resuming your regular activities, maintaining a steady weight is a great way to ensure your results last as long as possible. Significant weight fluctuations or pregnancy can affect your results and necessitate revisionary surgery, so it's important to commit to a healthy, active lifestyle for as long as possible.
