Even small improvements in your eyelids can revive the overall appearance of your upper face. Cosmetic eyelid surgery can reveal bright, clear eyes formerly concealed by excess skin and fat. Dr. Rebecca Garza performs blepharoplasty, often called eyelid surgery, for people from Munster and Crown Point, Indiana, and surrounding cities whose eyes look tired because of sagging upper eyelids or under-eye bags. Results often last for many years.

Talking It Over

During your consultation, Dr. Garza will perform a thorough examination. She obtains a complete medical history and asks whether you regularly experience eye dryness or pain. She will also examine your eyes, eyebrows, and lids and evaluate how they interrelate both aesthetically and functionally.

Procedure Specifics

Eyelid surgery occurs on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the day of your procedure. You will receive either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The procedure typically lasts between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the amount of tissue removed and whether your procedure involves surgery of both the upper and lower eyelids.

For an upper eyelid lift, Dr. Garza makes an incision in your natural eyelid crease to remove excess skin and tissue. For a lower eyelid lift, she will make a delicate incision along the lash line of the lower eyelid or, in some cases, inside the lower eyelid. She closes the incision sites with very fine sutures.

Eyelid Surgery for Men

Men can have surgery on both their lower and upper eyelids; however, treatment of the lower eyelid is more common. Revision of the lower eyelid can help men look more energetic and much younger. Lower eyelid surgery is more common for men because sometimes upper eyelid surgery can feminize a man’s appearance. To avoid this, surgeons must create a precise and individualized surgical plan to ensure a more masculine shape for the eyes and make careful incisions for optimum results.

Whether it is lower or upper eyelid surgery, gender is an important factor for the surgeon to keep in mind. Dr. Garza is highly trained and experienced in performing both female and male eyelid surgery. She makes sure to take your goals into consideration while implementing safety and proper technique.

More Information

  • Many patients seeking blepharoplasty actually need a forehead lift to address a sagging or heavy brow.
  • Some patients choose to have additional facial sculpting procedures such as a facelift to create comprehensive results.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Dr. Garza will lubricate your eyes before releasing you. Any discomfort will usually be minimal and can be relieved with medication.

Sleeping with your head elevated for a night or two and applying a cold compress during the day can reduce any swelling. You may experience blurred vision for a few days. In rare cases, patients have trouble closing their eyes completely for a week or two. Your sutures will be removed within a week, which may alleviate tightness.

Bruising and swelling will dissipate in about 10 days. Avoid activities that cause dryness or irritation to your eyes, including wearing contact lenses. Your eyes may be sensitive to light for the first week.

You can return to light activities within a few days. Many patients wait to return to work until their stitches are removed. Though you may feel great within the first week of recovery, remember to monitor your blood pressure and avoid strenuous activities.

How Much Does Eyelid Surgery Cost?

Because each procedure is customized, the cost of eyelid surgery varies from person to person. As part of the consultation process, Dr. Garza and her team will provide you with a personalized estimate so you know what to expect in terms of pricing. We accept payments through several financing companies, such as CareCredit®, to make your transformation even more affordable.

Eyelid Surgery FAQs

Should I get eyelid surgery or a forehead lift?

Many of the patients who come in for forehead lift or eyelid surgery consultations are better candidates for one treatment or the other. It’s often difficult to know without being assessed by an experienced plastic surgeon. Aging causes our upper eyelids to sag and results in excess skin and fat. If the brow itself is sagging, surgical elevation results in a more alert appearance. In many cases, combining the procedures achieves better results. Dr. Garza can help you decide which choice is best for you.

Will eyelid surgery remove dark circles under my eyes?

Blepharoplasty for the lower eyelids can remove fatty under-eye bags, but it generally won’t diminish the appearance of dark circles.

Am I too young for eyelid surgery?

Because our eyes are one of the face’s primary focal points, people tend to notice even slight imperfections at an earlier age. There isn’t a true age limit for eyelid surgery as long as you’re a healthy adult. Genetics can sometimes be to blame for eyelids sagging before you turn 30. If it bothers you, consult with a plastic surgeon about possible solutions, including surgery.
