Large or irregular labia can cause women to feel self-conscious or experience physical discomfort during physical activity or sexual intercourse. Discussing such intimate concerns can be difficult, which is why many patients choose a woman who’s a board-certified plastic surgeon to talk about potential solutions such as labiaplasty. In Indiana, Dr. Rebecca Garza brings a woman’s perspective to vaginal rejuvenation procedures, which can enhance your sense of comfort.

Women looking for a plastic surgeon in Indiana to perform labiaplasty travel from Munster, Valparaiso, and surrounding areas to our Schererville practice to have Dr. Garza perform their surgery.

Can You Benefit From Labiaplasty?

Even though labiaplasty is an increasingly popular procedure, many women are still not aware that surgery can help address their comfort and aesthetic concerns. Labiaplasty patients typically are women whose labia change after giving birth vaginally or who have always had larger or irregularly shaped labia minora, majora, or both.

Good candidates for labiaplasty are women in good overall health who have one or more of the following concerns:

  • Excess tissue that causes the labia minora to hang down lower than the outer labia
  • Discomfort or pain during sexual activity and exercise
  • Self-consciousness about wearing tight clothing, such as yoga pants and swimsuits
  • Dark or discolored labial edges

Labiaplasty can be performed for both functional and aesthetic purposes. Patients should also have reasonable expectations about what the procedure can accomplish.

How Is Labiaplasty Performed?

During your consultation, Dr. Garza explains the surgical procedure to ensure you feel comfortable and confident about your decision to undergo labiaplasty. Different surgical techniques can be used to perform labiaplasty, which removes excess tissue from the inner vaginal lips (called labia minora).

Dr. Garza performs labiaplasty as an outpatient procedure, which means you’ll return home the day of your surgery. In most cases, she uses a local anesthetic plus twilight sedation during the surgery to ensure patients remain comfortable. Dr. Garza’s attention to detail is seen in the meticulous incisions she makes before removing the excess labial tissue and then closing the incisions with absorbable sutures.

What Is Recovery Like After Labiaplasty?

Patients feel groggy when they return home, so having someone drive you to and from the procedure is required. The initial recovery phase typically lasts up to 7 days or more, depending on the specific technique used during the surgery.

During the first week of recovery, you can expect:

  • Swelling and bruising
  • Discomfort and pain, managed with medication—either extra-strength acetaminophen or ibuprofen or stronger prescription pain medications
  • Occasional spot bleeding

You’ll get detailed post-operative instructions that describe activities you should avoid and things to do to enhance the healing process. Even though getting enough rest is key, it’s important to move around occasionally. Taking brief walks around the home starting the day after surgery boosts blood circulation.

You may notice numbness in the labia that leads to a tingling sensation of “pins and needles” as it gradually resolves. It can also take a few months for the swelling to completely resolve so you can see the procedure’s results.

Activity Restrictions

We recommend taking about a week off from work if your job doesn’t require strenuous physical labor; if it does, the time off needed is longer. Avoid running, bicycling, swimming, and other demanding workouts for about 4 to 6 weeks. This is also the amount of time needed before having sexual intercourse. Following these recommendations minimizes the risk of complications and helps ensure you get the desired results.
