This 78 year old Northwest Indiana gentleman came to our Munster, Indiana plastic surgery office for a consultation to rejuvenate his neck but wanted to avoid a complete facelift. An evaluation by Dr. Galante, a plasic surgeon specializing in cosmetic surgery revealed a typical "turkey gobbler" neckline consisting of loose skin and excess fat under the chin. A facelift would likely result in the raising of his sideburn as well as bearded skin behind his ears requiring him to shave there. A neck lift, also known as a cervicoplasty, was a less invasive procedure that addressed his concerns and avoided the problematic issues of a male facelift.
A neck lift can accomplish the desired result of a more aesthetically contoured neck with less surgery, fewer risks, and a shorter recovery period than a traditional facelift. A neck lift consists of excising the redundant skin directly, removing excess fat, and tightening the underlying platysma muscle that commonly produces vertical bands in the neck. The trade off is a scar in place of the hanging skin most of which would be hidden from view under the chin.
This patient elected to undergo a neck lift after weighing the pros and cons of a facelift and the less involved neck lift. He had this plastic surgery performed as an outpatient under local anesthesia with sedation. He was able to shower the day after surgery, and his sutures were removed on the fifth day following this surgery. The neck scar remained pink for about 6 weeks and began to fade shortly thereafter.
His before and after photos demonstrate the improvement that can be gained from this alternative to facelift surgery for men. In addition, a mild improvement can be noted in the contour of his jaw line. A cervicoplasty is an excellent procedure that creates a more youthful neck profile with out the added recovery time of a facelift.
