SkinPen® Microneedling

The versatility and effectiveness of microneedling treatments are among the reasons they’ve become one of the most popular skincare procedures at our Schererville and Valparaiso, Indiana locations. Microneedling minimizes acne scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks and improves the skin’s texture. The minimally invasive procedure requires little downtime, and we can treat patients of all skin types.

What is SkinPen Microneedling?

The SkinPen is a handheld device with tiny needles at the tip that’s cleared by the FDA for collagen-induction therapy (CIT). It improves the skin’s appearance by creating thousands of controlled microinjuries in the skin’s epidermis, stimulating the body’s natural healing process. As the wounds heal, the body produces collagen, an essential element of smooth skin.

Who Can Benefit From Microneedling?

Virtually anyone who wants to improve the appearance of their skin—on their face or body—can get the results they want with microneedling treatments. The SkinPen microneedling procedure is safe for all skin types and ethnicities, and it works well for both women and men.

Microneedling with the SkinPen can improve the appearance of:

  • Wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Uneven skin tone/texture
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Large pores
  • Sagging skin

We can adjust the SkinPen to penetrate at varying depths, depending on the type and severity of the skin condition. The results emerge gradually. Your immune system initially responds by increasing blood flow to the area before beginning to create new tissue. This process continues and ultimately results in the tiny wounds being replaced by new dermal tissue and blood vessels.

What Happens During a Microneedling Treatment?

Your provider first applies a topical numbing medication to keep you comfortable throughout the treatment. Patients typically say they feel some pressure and vibration as the pen moves across the treatment area. As it glides over the skin, the SkinPen creates tiny punctures. The procedure lasts about 30 to 60 minutes.

Patients usually notice that their skin appears a bit pink or red after each treatment. Some experience dryness, tightness, and itching. Your post-care kit includes information about how to care for your skin. Returning to work within 24 hours is typical for most patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SkinPen?

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy (CIT), is performed with the versatile SkinPen device on all skin types. The procedure creates micro-injuries that stimulates the skin’s natural healing process, which produces new collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin and the fundamental elements of healthier, more youthful-looking skin. SkinPen can improve the skin’s appearance on the face, neck, décolleté, legs, abdomen, and back.

How does SkinPen work?

SkinPen triggers the body’s self-repair mechanism that in turn stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin. Doing this creates smoother, firmer, skin that looks younger. Treatments can reverse years of sun damage and minimize the appearance of acne and surgical scars, shrink pores, and enhance the skin’s overall appearance.

Who is NOT a candidate for SkinPen?

Microneedling with SkinPen is not possible if you are currently being treated for skin cancer, have open wounds or sores, have irritated skin, or keloid scars. Additionally, patients who are pregnant or nursing, who are allergic to stainless steel or anesthetics also aren’t candidates for SkinPen treatments.

SkinPen also can’t be performed on patients with scleroderma, collagen vascular diseases, cardiac abnormalities, a hemorrhagic disorder or hemostatic dysfunction, or an active bacterial or fungal infection. Also, patients who are currently using isotretinoin (Accutane®) cannot undergo SkinPen treatments.

If you’ve had semi-permanent fillers injected, such as RADIESSE®, Sculptra® Aesthetic, Bellafil®, Artecoll®, or Aquamid, SkinPen treatments pose a risk of granulomas.

What is the downtime after a SkinPen treatment?

It’s normal for a patient’s skin to appear red and flushed similar to a mild sunburn after a SkinPen treatment. Tightness and mild tenderness are also possible. The time needed to heal varies, depending on the depth of the treatment and the severity of the damaged skin. You can expect skin to remain pinkish for 2 to 4 days.

When will I see results?

Patients usually notice their skin looks healthier immediately after the treatment. As the skin’s natural healing process continues for several weeks, the collagen remodeling improves the skin’s appearance for 6 to 12 months.

How many treatments are needed?

This varies from patient to patient. We recommend at least 3 treatment sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Patients who need deeper treatments, such as patients with acne scars, may need as many as 9 treatment sessions. After the initial series of treatments, we recommend coming in for periodic procedures to maintain the results. Combining SkinPen with other aesthetic treatments can help customize the overall outcomes.

How do you prepare for a SkinPen treatment?

Two weeks before the procedure we recommend avoiding direct sun exposure as much as possible, waxing, depilatories, laser hair removal, chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, and injections of fillers or neurotoxins (BOTOX®). On the day of your treatment, we’ll take “before” photos and prepare your face with alcohol. Topical anesthetic is applied to the treatment area and left on for 30 minutes.

What are the instructions for after a SkinPen treatment?

You can use SkinFuse Lift to minimize discomfort the day of the treatment. Showering and cleaning the treatment area with warm water is okay 2 to 3 hours after the procedure.

During the first 2 weeks after the treatment, only use skincare products that are included that we recommend. Using sunscreen is a must and should be re-applied regularly. You should expect light to mild flaking during the first couple of days and you should avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
