Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Before & After Case 46

This 57 year old Indiana patient presented to our Munster, Indiana plastic surgery office with the desire to rejuvenate her eyes and appear less tired. She complained of baggy upper and lower eyelids. These are classic concerns for individuals seeking a consultation for blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery.

Her exam as shown on her before photo of her eyes revealed excess upper eyelid skin with the right being slightly worse than the left. It is not uncommon to have a slight amount of asymmetry where the eyes are not exactly the same. The lower eyelids demonstrate the typical bulges seen as a result of excess protrusion of fat.

When evaluating the eyes for plastic surgery, care must be taken to examine the brows as well, because they can contribute significantly to the overall appearance of this region of the face. Although his patient had mild droopiness to her eyebrows, she did not want them altered surgically.

She was an excellent candidate for an upper and lower blepharoplasty. The procedure was performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia in one of the Northwest Indiana surgery centers for plastic surgery used by our office. An ellipse of excess skin was removed from the upper eyelid along with a narrow strip of muscle to create a more defined upper eyelid crease. The resultant scar is hidden in this crease. The lower eyelid can be approached from the outside, on the skin just under the eyelashes, or from the inside where there would be no evidence of a scar.

In this patient’s case the lower blepharoplasty was performed from the outside as she required the removal of a small strip of excess skin in addition to the fat. The ensuing scar is camouflaged just beneath the lower eyelid margin. She had some mild swelling and bruising several days following her surgery, but within ten days she had almost no perceptible sign of having had cosmetic surgery.

Her before and after photos exhibit the striking improvement that can be achieved with a blepharoplasty procedure. The patient had prominent blue eyes which became more apparent after her plastic surgery. She was extremely satisfied with her rejuvenated, rested, and natural look.
