Sun damage is a primary cause of premature aging, causing discoloration and poor skin texture that inhibits a youthful appearance. The more time your skin spends in the sun, the sooner you’re likely to experience these unwanted concerns. While going back in time and slathering on the SPF isn’t possible, we can now reverse some of these effects with IPL skin rejuvenation treatments at our Schererville and Valparaiso, Indiana, practices.
With the summer coming to a close, it may be a good time to consider options for reversing any damage that may have occurred over the last few months. Read on to learn more about what IPL treatments can do for sun-damaged skin.
What does IPL do for your skin?
IPL, which stands for intense pulsed light, delivers light energy to the skin to even out coloration and minimize the appearance of pigment-related concerns, including:
- Visible capillaries
- Dark spots often caused by sun exposure.
It also stimulates the natural production of collagen, improving skin elasticity and creating a healthy, even tone.
How long does an IPL facial treatment last?
Each IPL treatment takes about 15 to 30 minutes. You’ll wear protective glasses to shield your eyes from the light, though you may still notice some bright flashes. We will apply a soothing gel to your skin to keep you comfortable. You may experience a warming sensation throughout the session. These treatments are known for being relatively gentle and requiring minimal downtime, so you’ll likely be able to return to your daily activities immediately.
Does IPL have side effects?
IPL treatments are relatively low-risk procedures. You may experience some redness and warmth, similar to the feeling of a sunburn, the day of your treatment. If you do not eliminate the use of blood thinners or similar medications per our advisement, there is a chance you may experience some bruising.
How Is IPL good for skin? Does IPL stimulate collagen?
The treatment can be beneficial for skin, especially if you suffer from dark spots or rosacea. With treatment, you’ll see a more even skin tone with the minimization of dark sunspots and discoloration. And yes, the heat generated by IPL treatments also stimulates collagen production, so you’ll see healthier, younger-looking skin over time.
How long should you leave between IPL treatments?
We often recommend between 2 and 6 treatments spaced a few weeks apart to achieve optimal results. You can read about one woman’s firsthand experience with IPL in this Glamour magazine article.
Are there other options?
Our practice offers many skin rejuvenation options that may help your skin recover from sun damage. One option to consider is a chemical peel, which removes the damaged outer layer of cells and reveals the healthier complexion underneath. Learn more about chemical peels in this previous blog post.
