Latisse vs. Lash Extensions

Screen Shot 2015-07-20 at 7.26.09 PMDo you want longer, thicker lashes? In addition to false lashes and ample applications of mascara, there are two more options for thick, long lashes: lash extensions and Latisse.

Lash extensions have become the rage over the past few years. Local salons and “eyelash extension” establishments offer a range of lengths and colors. Initial application takes about 1 ½ to 2 hours, and “fills” (maintenance/reapplication) require about 45 minutes to an hour in the technician’s chair about every 3-4 weeks. Result: long, dark, thick lashes.

Since Latisse was approved by the FDA in 2006, it has effectively lengthened, darkened and thickened the lashes of millions of women. This prescription serum is available through our Indiana plastic surgery practice. It’s applied nightly at the base of your upper lashes with a sterile, disposable brush that’s provided with the Latisse serum (you use a new, sterile brush each night). Result: long, dark, thick lashes.

The Pro’s and Con’s of Eyelash Extensions and Latisse

Eyelash extensions give you instant results, not counting the 1 ½ to 2 hours for application. The lashes are dark and thick enough to eliminate the necessity for mascara, which can save you time getting ready for work or going out. They look natural, assuming you don’t get the ultra-long variety. On the negative side, lash extensions begin to look pretty bare and scrappy when it’s time for a fill-in. A full cycle of lash growth varies among individuals, but the average is between 6-8 weeks. Having said that, due to individual lash “fall-out,” most lash salons recommend fill appointments every 3-4 weeks to maintain a full set.

Latisse doesn’t instantly create long, lush lashes but it does eliminate the need to sit in a technician’s chair for 2 hours for application and another 60-90 minutes every 3-4 weeks for refills. Lashes will appear longer, darker and thicker at about 4 weeks, with maximum improvement at 16 weeks. Most of our Indiana Latisse patients find that they can go without mascara, as their lashes are not just longer and thicker, but darker as well. The lashes look natural because they are: they’re your lashes, just darker, longer and thicker. Latisse is easy to apply: takes 20 seconds, max. Compared with lash extensions, you’ll never have “bare spots,” or ratty looking lashes when it’s time for a fill, nor will you have fake lashes and glue on your lash line. You won’t have to come into the office every 3-4 weeks for more Latisse, like you would with lash extensions.

The Cost of Lash Extensions vs. Latisse

In the Valparaiso area, an initial application of eyelash extensions ranges from $180 to $250, and fills run $65 to $80. Assuming one had an initial application plus fills every 3.5 weeks (an average from above), at an average initial application price of $215 and fills at an average price of $72, a year’s investment for lash extensions would be in the range of $1200. And, just in case your time is worth something, application and fills for lash extensions would require about 15 hours of your time per year.

At my Valparaiso plastic surgery practice, Latisse retails for $110 for a 2-month supply. Therefore, $110 x 6 = $660 plus tax for a year’s supply of Latisse. Time required to apply Latisse nightly? About 2 hours per year.

While I’d never want to get between a woman and her lashes, Latisse is the obvious winner in all areas: cost, time, convenience, and appearance. If you’re thinking about lash extensions, give us a call at 800-721-3244 and get started with Latisse for longer, darker and more gorgeous lashes! If you start now, on Thanksgiving Day the turkey won’t be the only thing your family will be ooh’ing and aah’ing about!
