The “Right” Age For Botox®

Here at my plastic surgery practice in Indiana, Botox® patients usually start using this wonder-injectable in their 40’s or older. They want to eliminate the ever-increasing fine lines and wrinkles that are an unwanted symbol of aging. While Botox® does eliminate these wrinkles and folds after they’ve developed, by injecting sooner, you can keep them from appearing in the first place!

What is Botox®?

Since botulinum toxin was first identified in 1895, medical researchers have continued to find uses for this paralytic agent. Purified botulinum A toxin is used to treat migraines, muscle spasms, tension headaches, teeth grinding, excessive sweating, and overactive bladders. However, most cosmetic patients know botulinum A toxin as Botox®, which was introduced in 2002 as a treatment for the glabella, aka the 11’s, the lines between the brows. In my Indiana plastic surgery practice, Botox® is also used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles in the forehead and crow’s feet.

Are You Ever Too Young for Botox®?

Several research studies show that, when used prior to the development of wrinkles, Botox® can actually prevent some wrinkling. Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Dermatology, commentary states that it’s “rarely too early” to start using “neuromodulators (such as Botox®), fillers and noninvasive energy-based treatments.” Most men and women won’t start using Botox® and other anti-aging treatments before the age of 30, which, for most in that age group, is in plenty of time to forestall the development of wrinkles caused by facial expressions, like crows’ feet, frown lines between the brows and wrinkles in the forehead. By addressing these “muscles of expression” early on, wrinkles that would otherwise develop, don’t.

A 2006 twin study actually proves this concept. Sets of twins were followed for a period of 13 years in this Dartmouth Medical School study. One of each twin set was treated regularly with Botox® and the other twin was not. Photographs easily identify the twin who was treated compared with the twin who underwent “normal” aging.

This Age is “Just Right”

So, what’s the right age to start Botox® and other non-invasive skin treatments to prevent wrinkling? It’s when you begin to notice and are bothered by wrinkles. There’s no set age, and no set amount of wrinkling or skin aging that constitutes “the right age.” For many people, a commitment to an anti-aging regimen of Botox® boils down to simple economics. The average patient gets Botox® every four months, for an average of approximately $1560 per year. If that $1560 doesn’t limit access to other important lifestyle choices, it’s a simple decision.

The Most Important Decision about Botox® Injections

The most important decision is actually less about when you start Botox® injections, as it is about your choice of injector. As a board certified Indiana plastic surgeon, I have injected thousands of men and women over the course of my career. A deep understanding of facial anatomy bolsters this experience, and means that, regardless of your particular wrinkling pattern, I can improve your appearance. If you’re considering anti-aging treatments such as Botox® injections here in Northern Indiana, call me for a private consultation at 800-721-3244 or complete this online contact form to schedule your consultation today.
