While many men and women focus their anti-aging treatments and procedures on the face and neck, our hands often give away our age! Look at your hands—right now. Do they give away your age? Fortunately, making your hands look younger is pretty standard procedure here at my NW Indiana plastic surgery practice.
Radiesse for Hand Rejuvenation
Radiesse® is a dermal filler most often used to smooth facial wrinkles, and has become the gold standard to increase volume in the back of the hands, instantly giving a softer and more youthful appearance. Composed of minute calcium microspheres (similar to the minerals in your body) floating in a soft gel, Radiesse® stimulates the body to create more collagen. After the micro-particles are absorbed, natural collagen remains behind, contributing to young-looking hands. For most of our Indiana Radiesse® patients, results last up to a year.
Laser Treatments for Hand Rejuvenation
An additional option for hand rejuvenation is the use of laser energy to treat areas of hyperpigmentation that appear on the back of the hands. Over time, exposure to the sun’s rays increases the production of melanin, which results in these areas of hyperpigmentation, known as brown spots, age spots, or even “liver” spots, as at one time they were thought to be caused by liver problems. These spots are age-related—the older we are, the less capable is our skin to regenerate after sun exposure. By treating the upper layers of the skin with a laser, these spots can be minimized and, in some cases, completely eliminated.
Another treatment that can lighten age spots is a TCA peel. TCA stands for trichloracetic acid but don’t let the name frighten you, as this peel has been safely performed for over 20 years, and the acid is a close relative to simple vinegar. TCA causes the top layers of cells to dry up and peel away, exposing undamaged skin with a smoother texture. It’s terrific for treating sun damage on the hands as well as nearly anywhere on the body.
The Solution to Aging Hands
The combination of Radiesse® to plump the hands plus laser treatments and/or TCA peels to minimize or eliminate brown spots can dramatically turn back the clock on the appearance of your hands.
