Features & Benefits of BOTOX® Cosmetic

Today, BOTOX Cosmetic has become synonymous with looking young, feeling great, and helping smooth out lines and wrinkles on the face. It works so well that it’s currently the #1 non-invasive cosmetic treatment in the U.S.

In this blog post, we’re going to look at what exactly BOTOX is and how well it performs. We will also review the features and benefits that have made BOTOX treatments so popular at our practice in Valparaiso and Schererville, Indiana, and throughout the country.

What is BOTOX?

BOTOX Cosmetic is a highly purified form of the botulinum toxin. When injected into muscles, it causes them to temporary relax allowing lines and wrinkles on the skin to gradually smooth out.  After the initial treatment, BOTOX Cosmetic can take anywhere from 5 to 7 days before it starts to go to work. Full results won’t be seen until 2 to 3 weeks after the initial injections.

BOTOX is administered via injections from a sterilized needle. Some people might experience a small sting with each needle prick, but the overall process is generally painless. It’s also completely safe, provided that the procedure is performed in the office of a plastic surgeon.

How Often Do You Need It?

On average, the effects will last anywhere from 3 to 4 months. Because BOTOX is made up of organic substances, the human body will naturally absorb it over time. Once it’s been fully absorbed, the wrinkles and lines will gradually return and another round of BOTOX injections will be required.

Over time, regular injections into the facial area can “train” muscles to stay relaxed and this, in turn, will further help prevent wrinkles from forming. Sometimes men will require more BOTOX injections than women because men often have more pronounced wrinkles and age lines and stronger facial muscles than most women.

Benefits of BOTOX

BOTOX was created in the 1970s by a doctor looking for a way to treat crossed eyes. For the first 20 years after its discovery, BOTOX was used to treat actual medical conditions. Over time, doctors started to notice how well it worked in reducing wrinkles and lines. In the 1990s, the brand name BOTOX was registered and the FDA gave approval for it to be used in anti-wrinkle cosmetic treatments. Benefits of BOTOX include:

  • It’s effective: The most significant benefit of BOTOX is how well it works. Provided that a qualified plastic surgeon (or one of his/her trained assistants) administers the injections, it’s almost impossible to tell that someone has undergone the treatment.
  • Treatments are quick and easy: Another benefit of BOTOX is that it can be done in an outpatient setting. Aside from a few needle pricks, there is no downtime and people can return to their daily lives after getting the treatment performed. There are no scars, and it’s medically non-invasive.

What Other Conditions Can BOTOX Treat?

Over the years, doctors have found that BOTOX can be used to treat much more than facial lines and wrinkles; it can effectively address a wide variety of conditions, such as:

  • TMJ
  • Excessive sweating
  • Migraines
  • Vertical neck bands
  • Sagging brows and jowls
  • Imperfections of the nose

BOTOX can also be used in conjunction with dermal fillers such as Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® for a Lunchtime Facelift to restore the underlying support structure of the face.

What Are the Dangers of BOTOX?

As long as it’s administered in the office of a plastic surgeon, BOTOX is entirely safe. People run into complications when they get their BOTOX at a non-medical day spa or through a “Groupon discount.” BOTOX must be injected by a doctor (or staff trained by a doctor) because it is possible to accidentally inject it into other muscles.

Many day spa technicians have received training on how to administer BOTOX at a weekend seminar. They don’t have the same medical training or knowledge of human facial anatomy necessary to make the injections safely. Administering BOTOX also requires a trained hand and eye; this is where having your treatments in the offices of a plastic surgeon offers the greatest chance for patient satisfaction.

What Does BOTOX Cost?

The actual cost of a BOTOX procedure will vary from person to person. At our Indiana practice, the price is based on how many units are used. The total cost is calculated using the number of areas of the face that need to be treated.

The only way to know how much a BOTOX treatment will cost will be to schedule a consultation where you can sit down with the doctor and describe look you’re trying to achieve. The doctor will evaluate the area(s) you want treated and give you a specific cost.

What Are the Differences Between BOTOX and Fillers?

BOTOX and fillers are both injected into the face for temporary facial enhancement purposes. However, they work in entirely different ways.

  • BOTOX relaxes the muscles to smooth out wrinkles and lines.
  • Fillers such as Juvéderm® and Restylane® are gel products that physically fill in the wrinkles and add volume to areas of the face where aging is most noticeable.

Because they work differently, both BOTOX and fillers can be used at the same time for facial rejuvenation.
