Our Chicago area liposuction patients initially see me in consultation at my Indiana plastic surgery practice with lots of questions, naturally. How painful will this be? Can you get rid of the fat here, here and here? How quickly will I see results? Will the fat come back? Of course, as a board certified plastic surgeon in Indiana, I’ve done hundreds, if not thousands, of liposuction procedures and I have the answers to allay their fears and help them to look forward to their final results!
Where Can Liposuction Be Performed?
Liposuction can, literally, be performed anywhere on the body: the neck, upper arms, the back, buttocks, saddle bags, love handles, abdomen, inner and outer thighs, above the knees and even in the calves.
How Painful is Liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation unless the area to be treated is very small, such as beneath the chin or above the knees, in which a local anesthetic can be used. Since the incisions made to perform liposuction are incredibly small, post-liposuction discomfort is limited to a generalized soreness in the treated areas. This can be treated with over-the-counter medication, such as Tylenol, and usually disappears within 3-7 days. Rarely is stronger medication needed. There is some swelling and bruising, which can be treated with ice packs every 15 minutes on the hour.
The Speed of Liposuction Results
Once swelling has disappeared, which takes about 2-3 weeks, the results are obvious. Continued improvement will occur over the next six months. My liposuction patients wear a compressive garment following surgery to minimize swelling, to encourage rapid healing, and to allow the skin to adhere evenly over the newly contoured fat.
Will Liposuction Fat Come Back?
Once fat cells are removed, they will not “grow back” or repopulate the area(s) from which fat was removed. It’s important to remember, however, that maintaining a stable weight is essential following liposuction, as you can still put on fat in other parts of the body.
Our Indiana liposuction patients are delighted with their new, slimmer silhouettes!
