Spider veins are a common source of insecurity during the summer months, and they unfortunately keep many men and women from exposing their legs in warm-weather clothing. With spider vein treatment at our Schererville and Valparaiso, Indiana, practices, we can improve the appearance of these frustrating vein clusters and give you the boost of confidence you need to show off your skin.
In this blog post, I’ll explain what spider vein treatment entails and what you can realistically expect when it comes to results.
How Sclerotherapy Works
During spider vein treatment, also called sclerotherapy, we use a very fine needle to inject a solution into a targeted vein. This causes the vein to collapse, and the blood is rerouted through a healthier vessel. Once the vein collapses, it’s reabsorbed into the surrounding tissue and gradually fades away.
Each injection treats about an inch of vein at a time, and sessions typically take an hour or less. You won’t need any anesthesia during the treatment, and you’ll be able to return to your daily activities right away.
How to Prep
During your consultation, we’ll discuss your medical history and assess your personal needs and limitations. The presence of spider veins can sometimes indicate other medical conditions, so we’ll review any other symptoms you may be having to determine if this is the case. We’ll also evaluate whether you’re an ideal candidate for sclerotherapy, based on your current health standing.
To prep for your treatment, you should stop taking anti-inflammatory drugs or herbals to decrease your chances of bleeding. It’s best to avoid applying any topical products on the day of your appointment. Learn more about how you can prep here.
After Your Treatment
While you’ll be able to return to most of your daily activities immediately, you’ll need to avoid strenuous exercise for about a week. You’ll also need to wear a compression garment or wrap for a few days to encourage the vein’s collapse. It’s important to take daily walks to improve your circulation and prevent any blood clots from forming.
You can typically expect to see results within 3 to 6 weeks, at which time you’ll be able to determine whether you would benefit from additional treatments. Many people require 2 to 3 sessions spaced about a month apart for the best results. Patients typically see a 70% to 80% improvement overall. Treated veins generally won’t return, but it’s important to note that new spider veins may still develop in the future.
If spider veins are keeping you from feeling confident this summer, it may be time to consider the benefits of sclerotherapy. With just a series of injections, you can stop hiding your legs and start enjoying the sunshine.
