Hundreds of men and women from NW Indiana come to our Schererville and Valparaiso plastic surgery offices to inquire about upper and lower eyelid surgery. This same-day procedure can take years off your appearance and, for some, even improve your vision!
What is Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery, called blepharoplasty, is an outpatient plastic surgery procedure that eliminates excess skin and tissue from the upper and/or lower eyelids to create a more youthful and rested appearance. Results are rapid and recovery is fairly comfortable, making it one of the most popular procedures.
Who is a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
If you are otherwise healthy, eyelid surgery can be an excellent way to eliminate sagging in the upper and/or lower eyelids. For most of our blepharoplasty patients, aging in the eye area is the principal reason for their decision to undergo eyelid rejuvenation. A blepharoplasty is often done on younger patients that come to us because they have hereditary eyelid aging, and by patients of many ages who experience vision problems due to sagging eyelids. There is a specific test to evaluate whether eyelid sagging is interfering with vision: ask Dr. Galante about this during your private consultation.
How is Eyelid Surgery Performed?
Depending upon your desire to have both eyelids treated or just one (upper or lower), the procedure can be performed with sedation and local anesthesia. If you are undergoing a facelift procedure, your blepharoplasty can be added, in which case you will be under general anesthesia. Once the appropriate anesthesia has been instituted, excess skin and tissues will be removed and sutures placed so as to be nearly invisible after healing. You will go home the same day with postop instructions.
Recovery From Eyelid Surgery
Recovery from a blepharoplasty is usually uneventful. Most patients need no pain medication beyond Tylenol. Eye packs are helpful to reduce swelling and discomfort. Dr. Galante will have already scheduled your first postop appointment but, if you have any concerns prior to that date, be sure to call our office.
