At a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) of 21, this 49 year old resident of Northwest Indiana was seen in our plastic surgery office in Munster, Indiana in consultation for liposuction. She desired contouring of her abdomen, hips, and inner thighs. Her weight was 124 pounds and was five feet four inches in height. She was otherwise healthy and was an excellent candidate for liposuction for several reasons.

First, she had localized collections of fat in her abdomen, hips, and inner thighs. Secondly, she had good tone to her skin, which allowed her skin to recoil faster and and evenlt over the newly contoured areas. In addition, the patient was within her ideal body weight, allowing the results of the liposuction surgery to improve her already shapely figure.

Markedly overweight individuals are not ideally suited for liposuction, because the treated areas may look disproportional to the untreated sites. Weight loss should be a consideration for this group of patients prior to liposuction surgery.

Our patient had her liposuction procedure as an outpatient under local anesthesia with sedation. She was instructed to wear a compression garment, similar to a girdle, for four weeks following the surgery. She was able to resume her daily activities within 2 days of the surgery and returned to the health club and her exercise routine at three weeks.

The tumescent technique was used which lessened the swelling, bruising, and pain, thereby shortening the overall recovery time. Using the tumescent technique and small diameter cannulas, the scars are just over one eighth of an inch in length and are hidden from view in most fashionable garments and swimwear. 

Her before and after photos demonstrate the improved contour of her waist line and inner thighs. Following liposuction of these areas, she was able to fit better and more comfortably in her clothing with a shapelier hourglass contour of her torso.
