Outpatient Surgery Centers

Over 90% of the surgical procedures Dr. Galante performs take place in one of the two surgery centers he uses in the Northwest Indiana area - Lake Park Surgicare in Hobart or Same Day Surgery Center in Munster. Lake Park Surgicare is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and the Indiana State Board of Health. The Same Day Surgery Center is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Indiana State Board of Health.

Indiana plastic surgeon Dr. Gustavo Galante is often asked why he chooses to perform surgery in a surgical center rather than a hospital setting. Here's what he had to say, in his own words: "To me, the advantages of a surgery center are significant. It's a smaller, more private setting where a patient's needs can be attended to without the hectic pace often found in hospitals. Plus, performing plastic surgery at a surgery center is simply less expensive than a hospital setting."

Dr. Galante also believes that the quality and safety of the surgical environment is very similar when comparing a surgery center and a hospital. "The actual operating room environment is 100% the same between a hospital and surgery center for my needs - same level of equipment, personnel, instruments, and safety protocols. The only difference I can see is that hospitals have rooms for overnight stays, while the surgery centers where I work are strictly outpatient only." Dr. Galante makes every patient's safety a paramount priority. While outpatient surgery is extremely safe, a transfer protocol exists to relocate a patient to the nearest hospital facility if the need arises.

The Day of Your Surgery - What to Expect

Even though the vast majority of people who have cosmetic surgery in Indiana recover quickly with few if any complications, it can still be a little scary thinking about having a procedure, especially if you will require twilight or general anesthesia. For many people, cosmetic surgery is the first time they will be "put under," and Dr. Galante takes time to reassure his patients that they are in the capable hands of a board-certified MD anesthesiologist and/or a board-certified nurse anesthetist who are skilled at addressing the needs of people having outpatient surgery.

Here is a brief outline of what you can expect on the day of your surgery:

• Arrive 1 hour before your scheduled surgery time
• Register and fill out any required paperwork
• Get prepped for surgery and review your medical history with the nursing staff
• If twilight or general anesthesia will be used, meet with the MD anesthesiologist and have an IV inserted
• Be wheeled to the OR and have anesthesia administered
• Have your procedure
• Move to a recovery room after the procedure to be monitored until fully awake
• Meet with your family and friends, get something to drink and wait until you are cleared to head home
• Have a friend or loved one drive you home

Dr. Galante calls all of his patients the evening after surgery to check in on their recovery. Also, a member of the surgery center staff will call you the next day to make sure you are comfortable and had a satisfying experience. Depending on the procedure, you will then return to Dr. Galante's office for one or more follow-up visits in the weeks and months to come.
