Dr. Galante will also need to get a complete medical history during the appointment. At our Indiana cosmetic surgery center, tumescent liposuction may be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia on an outpatient basis, so you will be able to return home the same day. Tumescent liposuction utilizes a solution of saline combined with local anesthetic and adrenaline. The local anesthetic keeps you comfortable for several hours after the procedure, and the adrenaline reduces the amount of bruising by decreasing the amount of bleeding during the procedure. The solution is injected into the affected area, and a small incision is made for a cannula (a thin tube) which is used to suction out the fat deposits. The tumescent technique is gentler on your body than previous liposuction techniques; there is less trauma to surrounding tissue which reduces swelling and pain. The procedure may last from 1 to 2 hours on average depending on the number of areas treated.

You will feel sore for a few days after the procedure, and you may notice a dramatic decrease in your energy level. Any discomfort can be managed with medication. You will need to wear a compression garment over the affected area for 1 month after your liposuction procedure. You will be able to engage in light physical activities after a week, but strenuous workouts should be avoided for several weeks.

Because of initial swelling after your tumescent liposuction procedure, you may not be able to see any results for 2 or 3 weeks. Once the swelling goes down, you will begin to see and feel the results, and your clothes should fit better. Your body may continue to reduce in size for up to six months, after which time, you will see the full impact of your liposuction procedure. Since fat cells are permanently removed, you will not regain weight in the treated area, but if you do not maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly, you will gain weight in other areas of your body.
